"Main"-Profession
Heya there!
I know there are already plenty of threads like this, but i cant find the answer in them. :P My main at the moment is an assassin. But it just bores me so fast after playing on him, just because i dont like melee that much. So my question in this thread is to get some help on choosing my profession. It's not like a 'what profession is the best one'-thread. I just want some tips, advices etc... xD Also I'm a person who wants to have a 'main'. ^^ And I'm talking here about PvE. I don't care about PvP, as I can create a pvp char there. At first I love playing an assassin but melee fighting is not really my taste. Out of the melee professions (Dervish, warrior and assassin) I like assassin the most. Things which are important to me: *Not relying on one specific build; So being able to run different builds with the same purpose. Like an ele can go damage with water, earth, fire and air. *Being able to fill different roles in your team effective ; I find this point quite important, because I don't want to be a dps, healer, imba, etc. I wanna be able to fill different roles in my team. Especially support and DPS I find important. *On DPS I'd prefer magic/ranged damage; Like an Elementalist and smiting smonk, etc. I dont like being melee as i mentioned above. *Being useful to my team; I think I said this before in the first and second point. I don't wanna be some useless guy which just walks with my party, but wanna get us on. *I don't care anything about solothings. I mean I don't care about (solo)farming, running to outposts/missions/dungeons. I can create an additional special character for that. ----- I already have tried out different professions on lvl 20. Just slowly working them to complete all campains etc. But I just want to have a maincharacter which I get my titles and stuff on etc. ^^ Again, im not somebody who plays a different profession every 10 minutes. Thanks, and sorry for the long post. |

AP Nuker MM - not minion bomber, but real minion master with the new blood bond Order/Bipper /Mo o /Rt healer you can go either dps, healer, support, buff, it's magic, it's ranged, it's very useful to your team, it can even farm but you're not forced to do it I hope this helps^^ |

Necromancer has the support and backing of Anet and the Test Krewe with skill buffs. If you want a profession that already strong with more strong skills to come, then necromancer will be your choice. They can run conditions builds with Fevered Dreams better than mesmer, heal better than a monk often, minion wall 'n bombing, Assassin's Promise + Mark Of Pain nuking, melee buff, and much more.
Running something that isn't a ritualist or necromancer in PvE will leave you open to nerfs. Hope that helps! |

From you points the following professions are the most fitting: Ritualist - Channeling/Restoration hybrids are good offensive and defensive supporters, with Spirit's Strength and a spear you can deal high damage on range, various different options of spirit spam. Ele - Very good defensive support with Earth Magic and medicore damage, extremly good at abusing secondary skills with with Ether Renewal, e.g. ER Infuse, Order, Smiter. Necro - Very good defensive and offensive support with Curses, Minion Master. Monk - Superior defensive support with Protection Prayers and Healing Prayers, good offensive and defensive support with Smiting Prayers but smiters are hardly accepted by PUGs. In general, you don't deal much damage as a caster by yourself but rather buff the physicals on your team to deal even more damage, e.g. with Honor of Strengh, Splinter Weapon or Mark of Pain. |

People need to think about end-game content when they're building there "Mains". Sure it's nice to have a maxed out Paragon done all the campaigns but there mostly useless for farming, make a Monk, Elementalist or even a Necro for some things. Necromancers are decent as they can Spirit Spam, /rt Heal, curse, MM, steal HP and even go 55HP necro.
Take your time and work it out, it's just smarter to make a character who can farm in PvE, eventually this is all you will be doing because Guild Wars PvE is tiny. |

Roll a necromancer RedQube, it satisfies all your check points. Cuilan sumed it up nicely why Necromancers are both jack of all trades and master of all trades.

Sorry, thats bugging me the skill is "Strength of Honor". As for the OP's question I agree with everyone else here use a monk, ritualist, or necromancer if you want versatility and usefulness to the party. Just about all of these will be accepted into a party pretty easily. |

You are suggesting monks because PUGs ask for monks? In fact they aren't surely the best healers in PvE. I use my monk for DoA, Urgoz etc.. with my allies because i know that they want monks to heal, but i've got also a ER healer, and i see the difference (i also use my necro for healing). In PvE i use my monk for spirit spamming/RoJ and healing only when i need it (rarely, thanks to my ER heroes).
Maybe you are suggesting monks for farming reasons? But the OP clearly stated that he doesn't care about farming. EDIT: My bad. He talked about "solo" farming and running. |

Either Necro (for reasons already posted), Rit (can run many different build styles - RestoRit, Spirit Spammer, MB, etc), perhaps Ele if you can see yourself switching between elements even though some are generally better than others. Maybe Monk as well, if you're into heal/prot. Smiters have trouble finding PuG's

Thanks for your comments! At the moment I am doubting between Monk, Necro and Ele. Because of the reasons you all said above.
Also what is important to me is doing high-end things like hard dungeons. Not an another person running your dungeon, but just playing them trough with your team. A monk can be very useful there of their healing. Necro because of the reasons you mentioned above and ele for nuking monsters. I just want to have fun at the harder/challenging things. I don't care about killing Stone hulking elementals outside of Sarledac sanitarum (<--i probably write this wrong xD). ` Just wondering, what kind of supportive role can a necro exactly give? Is it Rt healing what you're talking about, MM, order? Just wondering Thanks anyways! Looking forward to more comments, tips etc! |

They can use monk and ritualist healing.
Spam conditions with Fevered Dreams. Minions for a wall of bodies to absorb damage while also dealing damage. Give large constant damage bonuses, adrenaline, and health to melee and physical groups. |

Necro's are really all about the Soul Reaping, with Soul Reaping they excel at Spirit Spamming, Ritualist healing, Being a Minion Master, Being a Discorder, Hexes, everything. Basically play whatever you want but in the end picking a profession that's based on the end-game farming for PvE is the smartest choice.
Which if you look at the builds over at PvXWiki I'm sure you'll conclude what build / role you'd like to play for farming DoA, UW, FoW, ToPK, etc. |

I really enjoy playing on my Assassin using an Assassin's Promise build with Discordway heroes. The build has fun variants for all the nine possible secondaries: I just get my Deadly Arts to 16 and use a skill bar split in half with the first four skills same as at http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Discordway and the other four from my secondary.
I change my secondary and the last four skills all the time for practically endless variety and can sorta feel like the secondary is actually my primary because the AP/Discordway team build is so powerful that I have room for experimentation, even in HM. Oh, and I hardly ever use melee weapons, usually something from my secondary if it's a caster class or else a req-Smiting Prayers Staff of the Forgotten otherwise. |

1- necromancer
2- ritualist 3- elementalist Just make a necromancer. Elementalist is damage in normal mode and support in hard mode. The necromancer can easily use ritualist skills in pve because of soul reaping. So if u rly hate the necro looks, make a ritu xD Last edited by Warvic; Mar 20, 2010 at 12:46 AM // 00:46.. |

As others have said, Necro should fit the bill. I came to GW's from Flyff (in which I was a Blade) so assumed Warrior was the profession for me. Big mistake, I hated playing as a Warrior, but love playing as Necro! My Necro is my title achiever.
That said I also like bringing Jora along, gotta love heroes |

Don't think only about end-game content when you are building you main, but rather about if you like to play that character. Just like OP is doing with his post. You can get any new character from its starting point to any elite area or dungeon in less than 10 hours and still be effective. That's Guild Wars at it's best. Guild Wars at its worst is finishing off a farming character because Anet decided to nerf that profession. What are you going to do with your main title hunter then, if you are only interested in farming? And like OP stated Quote:
Play the character that suits you best, you like the most. If that's Necro for you, OP, go for it. Last edited by Arduin; Mar 20, 2010 at 09:04 AM // 09:04.. |

Thanks a lot for the much comments again! I really appreciate your tips etc.
@Arduin: You're right about the 4-8 char slots. I have 9 slots atm, but that doesn't matter in this thread. ^^ Of course they are meant to for 9 different chars to play. I play on different chars sometimes when I want to do something else. The thing why I'm looking for a mainchar is to get titles and all nice stuff for it. ----- So now Elementalist and Necromancer are left as I understand, I mean one of those 2 professions would be my 'best' main character. (Don't think I'm seeing this as a guess-game xD, like only blabla and blublu are left. ^^) I also read something about rit, but I don't like their primary that much. Spawning Power is pointed to things like spirits, minions and weapon spells, I want to do more than just that. Correct me if I'm wrong. Soul Reaping gives a lot of opportunity for different builds. You can even run an ele-build with it (even you can't get higher attributes than 12). It can give you some healing builds. So damage and support. So I like that and I'm gonna try some things out to get what I like. The ele, with energy storages can do different things too, with different builds. Of course dealing damage. But what kind of support can a Ele give? I know there is a great healing build, called Infuser with Ether Renewal, but what more? Something with orders I heard about. Sounds interesting too. But I heard and read somewhere (might be on forum here) ele's don't do damage in HM? Are they possible to do in any way? I mean when I get in a party for HM, the ele's usually run nuking builds. |

Ether Renewal: You can use this to fuel any spammable spells. The most obvious thing to use is Monk heals+prots, but I've read about people running orders with them. I'd have to run one to see how well it actually runs. Damage: The issue with Ele damage in HM is that it is all elemental damage, which gets reduced by armor. Things in HM have more levels and more armor than you, which both reduce the amount of damage armor affected damage does. Armor ignoring damage is generally more useful because it negates the benefits from those inherent buffs.
